Celebrating Northern Irish Medical Pioneers

Professor Frank Pantridge

Inventor of the portable defibrillator. Born in Hillsborough, County Down in 1916, Professor Frank Pantridge was a Northern Irish physician, cardiologist, and professor credited with transforming emergency medicine and paramedic services with his invention of the portable defibrillator in 1966. Known as the "Father of Emergency Medicine", Frank's "Pantridge Plan" for pre-hospital coronary care has saved countless lives worldwide.

Emily Winifred Dickson

The first woman in Northern Ireland to receive a doctor of medicine degree. Born in County Tyrone in 1866, Emily was also the first female Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and the first female Fellow of any of the Royal Colleges of Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland.

Sir James Murray

Creator of Milk of Magnesia. Born in County Derry, Sir James was a Northern Irish physician whose research into digestion led to his 1809 creation of the stomach aid now known as Milk of Magnesia. Originally named Fluid Magnesia, Murray established the company Sir James Murray & Son in order to successfully market it, setting up a factory in Belfast for commercial production of the medicine now found in home medicine cabinets.
