Celebrating Welsh Medical Pioneers

Aneurin Bevan

Founder of the NHS. His parliamentary career began with representing Ebbw Vale in 1929. By 1945 Bevan was appointed minister of health and was responsible for establishing the National Health Service, launched on 5th July 1948. In 1987 his memory was honoured with his statue on Queen Street, Cardiff.

Frances Hoggan

The first British-trained woman on the General Medical Council, and the second woman in Europe to earn a doctorate in medicine taking just three years to complete it instead of the usual six! Frances was the first female doctor to be registered in Wales and opened the first husband-and-wife practice in Britain.

Edwin Stevens

Designed the world's first wearable electronic hearing aid. Starting his hearing aid company 'Amplivox' in 1935 with just £100 of capital, he supplied hearing aids to Winston Churchill and became a major benefactor to the Royal Society of Medicine.

William Morgan

Creator of the first x-ray tube. In 1785 he presented a paper to the Royal Society of London on the effects of passing electrical currents through a partially evacuated glass tube, which produced a glow created by X-rays.
